Sri Lanka and Romania share a warm friendship and cooperation based on mutual understanding since the establishment of formal diplomatic relations on 15 September 1957. Both countries maintain Diplomatic Missions headed by Resident Ambassadors in each other’s capitals.
There have been several high level visits from Sri Lanka to Romania including the visits of Prime Minister Sirimavo Bandaranaike (1974), Prime Minister R Premadasa (1986), Minister of Irrigation Maithripala Senanayake (1973), Foreign Minister A C S Hameed (1978), Foreign Minister Prof G L Peiris (2013), Foreign Minister Tilak Marapana (2019), Foreign Minister Ali Sabry (2024) and Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath (2026).
One of the recent developments is the presence of a large Sri Lankan community in Romania. According to the Romanian Inspectorate General of Immigration, as of April 2026, there are about 26,000 Sri Lankans working in Romania, thereby contributing to the Romanian economy and enhancing people to people contacts between the two countries.
